A SSD in Your Pocket

I woke up a few days ago and realized I was still carrying the same 32 GB USB flash drive on my keychain that I purchased in 2010. I thought to myself, this is an unacceptable state of affairs. Totally. Unacceptable.

It’s been few years since I seriously looked at USB drive performance. Premium USB flash drives typically eke out about 10-20 MB per second, strongly favoring reads, but I’ve recently purchased a number of inexpensive 4 GB USB drives that barely got to 4 MB per second. That’s OK, since they were only intended as cheap floppy drive CD and DVD replacements. Based on that experience, I wasn’t expecting much improvement in the status quo. Continue reading

VOTE: Be a Participant, not a Spectator

Disillusionment, cynicism, bitterness, disgust, contempt, anger, frustration, righteous fury at hypocrisy, failed promises, forked tongues, unmet expectations, cronyism, the corrupting influence of corporate money, unfettered greed, blind ambition and the endless parade of slick haired, wide-smiling, White-teeth baring Gollums in three-piece suits is the snapshot of our 2012 political reality… it has been this way – forever, in every political community that has ever lived.

And, yet, I still implore you to exercise your constitutional right to vote tomorrow. There is a stark difference in the political platform of both candidates that will have tangible, long-lasting impact on the lives of individuals and communities. At the very least be a participant and not a spectator, and take a proactive stance in changing the narrative.

How to use Google Search more efficiently

I use Google to search for things a lot of my day.   Google does a really good job finding relevant results but sometimes I am looking for something so specific I really need to dig…

Some of these you may know about.. but if you don’t they will help you save a LOT of time.

  • OR word or “|” character  – For instance searching for “Treebays” | “Treebays”
  • Plus sign (+) – forces a word search.  If the word doesn’t exist it does not show. For instance +Jeremy
  • Minus sign (-) – forces not to show the keyword… like Jeremy -pearl jam
  • Tilde (~) character – THIS IS MY FAVORITE.  It uses synonyms.  So like lets say your looking for a SEO Primer page or paper.  Searching for “SEO Primer” (with out quotes). does not deliver very good results.. but SEO ~primer (without quotes) now gives results for SEO tips, SEO basics, SEO review, SEO introduction, SEO Guide etc etc.  Its really bad-ass.
  • Asterisk (*) character – MY SECOND Favorite – when you are searching for an exact match of something but synonym isn’t getting it done… you can use asterisks.  For instance if your searching for something in SEO like “really cool seo *” (use quotes on that one).

You just got  better with your Google Ninjitsu.

Jawish Hameed: Javascript Thaana Keyboard version 4.2.1

” Here’s an update to my Javascript Thaana Keyboard library which provides easy entry of Thaana on web pages without the involvement of OS-based keyboard switching. Hit the demo page to see it in action.

This release is solely a bugfix release addressing an issue with the display of newly entered text in multiline fields where text exceeds the size of the visible area. I originally cut this release in February but decided to hold back on a public release till I had further issues to fix or had new features added, neither of which has come since…

Thanks goes to Ahmed Ali for bringing the bug to my attention.

Windows 8 Gets An All New Skype Experience

Windows 8 is making software developers rethink how their applications look and feel. That is doubly true for Skype as they had to create a completely new interface for Windows 8 while appeasing their new overlords at Microsoft. The results are looking pretty nice. Continue reading

Five SEO News — October 22-26, 2012

Here are five of the most interesting and informative posts and articles for this week:

1.  Google Facts: The Changing Economics of AdWords — WordStream took a look at 26,000 advertisers on Google to discover the low down on details of AdWords (CTR, CPC, stats by industry, etc.) to figure out how Google was able to show an increase in advertising revenue at the same time as their lackluster overall financial performance for the quarter. Nice infographic, but be sure to read the analysis below as well. Continue reading

The cheesy love

Hopeless romantic: A hopeless romantic is someone who very much believes in love, to the extent that it is often said they are in love with love. They also have a penchant for romantic actions both big and small. (This is my favorite definition from Yahoo! Answers.)

I’ve been thinking about this a lot lately. I’ve stated that I am a hopeless romantic, have known in my heart that I am one, but have not backed it up quantitatively as one would be apt to do in order to prove to someone that you actually are what you say you are. Continue reading

‘Arrow’ Season 1, Episode 3: ‘Lone Gunmen’ Recap

While it appears that Arrow doesn’t want to let Oliver Queen (Stephen Amell) wallow in complete solitude with the secret he’s been hiding from his family and friends, there is some skepticism about how far the show will be willing to take things with John Diggle (David Ramsey) following the climax of ‘Lone Gunmen.’ Oliver has made it quite clear that the heroic persona he’s adopted is more valuable than a random thug’s neck, but in the aptly titled episode, he discovers flying completely solo may hinder his ability to help. 100 Ways Rich People Think Differently

They say if you want to be rich, you should hang around rich people. The advice sounds reasonable. After all, birds of a feather do flock together. However, this is only half the story. If you really want to be rich, you have to think like the rich.

Steve Siebold spent nearly three decades interviewing rich people around the world to find out what separates them from the 99%. His finding is summed up in a new book, How Rich People Think.

Steve concluded that being rich has little to do with the money itself. Instead, it had everything to do with mentality and how you think about money. The book is a pretty good read, and I recommend you get a copy. In the book, Steve divides people between “World Class” and “Middle Class”. In the interest of better SEO, I will call the groups the 99% and the 1%. Continue reading
